What scanner spec causes this difference? Cannon MF4350d vs MF3110

I have used my Cannon MF3110 to scan coins for years, it does a great job. I have since tried to scan coins on other scanners but there must be a specification that causes these other scanners to scan the coins differently (blurry rather than sharp). Note that both scanners scan documents just fine, but these coins are in plastic holders that leave the coin a few mm above the platen glass. I've fiddled with pretty much every setting I could find on the scanner software with no real improvements. The new scanner is the Cannon MF4320, but I've tried a few others with similar results.
So the question is:
Why does the MF3110 scan these coins so well and these other scanners will not? I would like to buy a new scanner that will scan coins nicely but I don't know what feature or spec to look for.

Solution
Why not use a camera? Scanners are not really made to do this type of work. People actually setup a rig to use with something like what you want, a frame with a camera mount set at a fixed distance, stick the object under the camera in a tray, snap, next.
