Should I buy a RX580 or a 1070?

I currently have a 1080p 60FPS monitor that support V-Sync. Initially I was going to buy a 1070 GPU. However, after reading a little bit of GPUS and the new GSYNC and FreeSync technology, I do not know what is better. To buy a 1070 now, or to buy a cheaper RX580 an after 3 years buy a new monitor and a new GPU that supports whatever monitor is the best at that moment, Gsync or Freesync. Any card that I buy now will only play at 1080p 60FPS.

Solution
support V-Sync
Games support V-Sync, not monitors. Unlike G/Free sync, it's not dependant on monitors.
GSYNC and FreeSync technology, I do not know what is better
G-SYNC is better, more stable with less input lag but much more expensive.

Since you're only playing at 1080p/60FPS, those technologies shouldn't matter to you. You would want something that can push 60fps with higher graphics for a longer period of time or be more future proof. I recommend buying a GTX 1070.

I have a RX480 which is close to a 580 and love it. I say it all depends on price and future plans. A 1070 is significantly better than a 580.

If you are only playing 1080p 60fps then a 1070 really is overkill. The 1060 and 580/480 are the go to 1080p 60fps+ cards. If you might upgrade your display then it would be worth it. You could also run the games in a higher resolution which does look much smoother even though your display is only 1080p. I often do this and it helps with alisiasing a ton.

I knew for 100% I don't get a new display until at least 2 or 3 years from purchasing my gpu so it was an easy decision. The 580 is even going to run many AAA games in 1440p 60fps.

What is the cost difference? All cards have been very overpriced for a while, but have settled some as of late. A 1070 is typically 50% more $ from what I remember, but haven't checked very recently.

One thing to consider is how much of a HUGE jump in performance each new GPU takes. Look at the GTX 1060 vs a 970, one model lower one gen newer and in most games it's significantly better. Look at a R9 270x, I wanna say it was 200$ maybe slightly less. It could not run AAA games on higher settings at 60fps, it was close on some if you put it on low. Compare that to a RX 470/480/580 all between 170-250$ and they blow them away, it's not even remotely close between a 470 and 270x.

Based on those trends, personally I would buy a 580 now and then when 2 or 3 generations from noe buy whatever that 350$ model is or the current 1070 equivalent. Why buy a 1070 now when you are only in 1080p and nvidia is coming out at least 2 new generations before you even move up your display.

Oh, also throw 1060 in the mix. If it's same cost as a 580 the 6gb 1060 should win out in a lot of games. Personally i would bhy whatever model you can get the best build for the price.. for example MSI has several tiers of their cards with the gaming x at the top. The build quality, cooling, OC, it's all superior. If your choice is 1060 lower tier MSI vs 580 gaming x, take the gaming x as you will have peace of mind and know it will last for sure
