Hi i just bought a Gygabyte Gtx 970 g1 gaming used and its running hot.
its idling with about 50% fan speed at 50 and 80 degrees celsius at full load with about 82% fan .could it be faulty? could a quick cleanup solve my problem? also is it safe to re - thermal paste the card?

Solution
50c idle with 50% fan speed? That's quite warm. 80c at 82% fan speed is not that bad unless it's throttling, which it may be. Check what core clocks go up to initially after putting the card under load then see how far they drop overtime as the card heats up.

If the cooler is caked with dust, cleaning it out could certainly help. If the thermal paste has dried up a bit then changing it could help as well. Changing it is safe for the most part if your careful. I change the paste on all my cards after the warranty runs out, it can improve temps quite a bit depending on the quality of the factory thermal paste and how fast it degrades. Be careful with the fan connector on the GPU, that's most often what people break when taking a GPU...

That GPU uses some thermal pads as well, be careful not to rip or get dust all over them when taking the card apart if you don't plan to replace them.

Sorry for being late but i repasted and cleaned the card and i see no improvement. I have a CM Q300L case with two 140mm fans at the front and one 120mm exhaust at the back. The card doest turbo, not to mention it thottles about 50mhz
