Hello all, I recently have been having a specific problem with my PC, where it can randomly restart while playing a game. It can occur quickly within 5 minutes of play, or even take much longer up to 4-6 hours before it will randomly restart with no warning or explanation. Eventually the problem started happening even when i was not gaming, like simply watching youtube or browsing Chrome.

I have been running my PC normally now, simply browsing the web and playing video games, for about 6 months (it is still fairly newly built), with no issues, and this problem has only started occurring for about 1 week now.

Naturally i monitored all temperatures and everything is in exceptionally good ranges, no oveheating, PSU is fairly new and appears to be running fine as well.

Tried everything i could think of, cleaned all components, reapplied thermal paste, swapped RAM and RAM slots etc.

I have come across a lot of posts claiming that such a problem is most likely PSU related, but before i also go down that road of randomly buying a PSU when it might not be necessary, i should mention that I checked my Event Logs, and there are MANY random warnings and errors before the eventual random restarts happen. A lot of them having to do with something called "DCOM".

Right off the bat I dont have much experience with much of, if any, of what these event log errors are trying to tell me, but i will share some of the logs of the past 2 days.

Hopefully someone can help lead me to some type of answer. One thing i have noticed with these logs is that every single time, the one error that occurs right before the restart, is one relating to "DCOM".

The logs are below, everything you see is basically repeated constanstly over the past couple of days, and there are currently around 3000 total exactly identical log error message, before and after the random restarts, from the past few days alone.

Maybe they are not even related to my restarting issue and all i really need to do is switch my PSU despite not having any idea why, but i am here for help.

Solution
Bad sectors indicate a hardware problem. The sector can no longer reliably retain its information, it is causing the software issue, not the other way around

It is time to buy a new disk.

You can reformat (full format) and skip the current bad sectors, but you are more than likely going to get more bad sectors and possibly a complete failure. It's not worth the risk. This disk has reached its end of life and should be replaced.

Save your data and get a new HDD or SSD.

Thanks for the reply,

So I ran memtest86 and all tests completed smoothly with 0 errors found, so i can assume the RAM is fine and not the issue.

When it came to the hard drive testing though, I used Western Digital's hard disk health testing software (the HDD i am using is a WD Scorpio Blue) and i left the test running overnight as i slept.

I woke up and my PC actually had no restarts, over the 5-6 hours that i left the program running, but the test was completed giving me an error stating "TOO MANY BAD SECTORS DETECTED".

At this point i clicked ok to see what else i could do, but the PC basically hard locked and i could not click anything, nothing was responding anymore. I could not even alt ctrl delete to enter task manager. the only response was the mouse cursor was still moving or responding to movement, but nothing at all could be done on the PC/ OS itself.

So at this point is it safe to assume the hard drive is the issue and can be causing the random restarts? and if so, before going out of my way to buy a new hard drive, is there a way to fix or repair these so called "Bad sectors" ?

Would completely formatting/ wiping the drive and reinstalling a fresh Windows salvage the situation, if bad sectors are being caused by corrupt files ? or does it imply physical damage? because i hear no clicking at all from the drive, nor have i ever dropped it in any way since purchase.

Also note, i am currently replying from the exact same PC, only difference is i am borrowing a friend's hard drive, because the previously mentioned hard drive is being recognized in the bios but isnt even booting into Windows anymore, it is just a black screen on startup or a never ending 0% on "CHKDISK" which automatically starts at times with an error message something like " One or more components aren't responding or being recognized"
