Vega 64 + Ryzen 2700x w/ Freesynce vs i7 860 + 1080

I have the Asus VG278Q 144hz monitor with a i7 860 processor and a 1050ti.

Games like overwatch or pretty smooth but when it comes to Fortnite my frames will dip below 144fps causes slight choppyness during gameplay (settings on low.)

I was thinking I could start by upgrading to a Vega64 video card that way I could utilize the Freesync technology hopefully resolving the chop issue then get a am4 motherboard and a ryzen 2700x.

Or would you suggest just switching out my 1050ti for just a stronger gtx like a 1070 or 1080? My only worry is I switch out and I still have a frame issue..

Suggestions, please.

The i7 860 is just not powerful enough to handle nowadays powerful cards. Your best choice without a question is upgrading your CPU, it may (and probably) be even bottlenecking your 1050ti and may be causing the choppyness you're talking about. And you'll really appreciate using Freesync with an AMD card.

I7 860 should cause issue on most new AAA games (low and/or very unstable fps).
I would start with the proc+mobo+RAM first before looking for better GPU.

For gaming, you don't need 2700x, 2600 or 2600x should be already good.

BTW, if your monitor can run FreeSync, you would be wanting an AMD card for that too, so that you can make the most of your monitor.
