Short story: I simply can't get my desktop computer to connect to the 5.0 ghz wireless, no matter what I do. The 2.4 ghz works fine.

Long story: I have comcast internet 150mbps. I have recently been having some sudden internet problems with my desktop computer. Issues consisted of periods of slow internet in addition to dropped connections. I called comcast, they sent a technician out, and they replaced my 6 year-old modem/router. Previous device was an Arris (I think it was TG1682G), and new device is a Technicolor XB6.

At first, they told me to not name the 2.4ghz and 5.0 ghz bands different names (like what I had before), but keep the name the same, and let my device and the router sort out the connection.
However, with this setup, my wireless adapter on my desktop would only connect to the 2.4 ghz band and would FREQUENTLY drop the connection. Occasionally, it did connect to the 5.0 ghz band and was actually fine and fast, but this was seldom.
This was intolerable. Comcast sent another tech to my house, and this time the tech separated out the 2.4 and 5.0 ghz bands into different names. He also put an attenuator onto the back of the modem/router. He got my computer connected to the 5.0 ghz band, and everything was fixed!

Or so I thought. He named the 2.4 and 5.0 connections something I didn't like, so I renamed them. Ever since then, I cannot connect to the 5.0 ghz band. I CAN connect to the 2.4 ghz band.
When I attempt to connect to 5.0 ghz band, Windows asks for my password (which I have confirmed is correct), and windows tells me "Can't connect to this network."
1) I have gone into wifi properties, and "forgotten" all my connections.
2) I have gone into the windows system registry and deleted all connection profile data.
3) I have reformatted my computer, reinstalled windows 10.
4) I have re-installed an older version of windows 10 to see if there was a recent update that made it malfunction.
5) I performed a factory reset of the modem (multiple times).
6) I have renamed the wireless connection.
7) I have purchased a brand new wireless adapter.
The first wireless adapter is a TP-Link Archer T6E ac1300.
The new one is an ASUS pce-ac68.
When I plug either one of these wireless adapters into another computer, they both work just fine and CAN connect to the 5.0 ghz connection.
8) I have installed, uninstalled, reinstalled drivers for both these devices multiple times.
9) I have removed the attenuator.
All of this has had no effect.
I just can't figure out whats wrong!?

I have a total of 14 devices that CAN connect to the internet, but usually, there is only 6-8 devices connecting at any one time. This was never an issue on the Arris modem. So far, is not an issue with my XB6, other than my desktop not connecting to the 5.0 ghz band.

Solution
Well this might not be the best answer, but I never use the providers router. The techs usually dont know how to set things up properly and the hardware is battered and cheap. I would go out and buy my own router and keep the names different. I didn't even know it was possible for them to have the same name and work correctly. If you dont want to do that I would reset the router using the button on it usually a small hole you put a pin in. Sounds like a setting in the router is screwed up.
