Ethernet Cord works on Xbox but not PC - not even with Ethernet USB adapter

Title. Ethernet cord is at most 2 years old. No obvious problems. Have restarted the computer and modem thus far, tried different ports, nothing working. Bought an AmazonBasics USB to Ethernet adapter but that's giving me the same error - "No Ethernet Cable plugged into adapter". Plug it into the Xbox and it works just fine. The Xbox has its own Ethernet cable and hasn't ever (I just got it last month) been connected via WiFi (and I checked) so it's 100% working there.

I've been using my fiance's wireless USB adapter whilst waiting for the Ethernet USB to arrive but now I'm not terribly sure what to do. It was working (the ethernet plugged into my mobo) and then out of nowhere disconnected and now is "dead" to my PC. My Xbox is next to the router so I have to move my PC to test that ethernet cord (shorter cord) ; the two possible outcomes are:

1. The other Ethernet cord works. Buy another ethernet cord and assume that this one's failing and only my PCMR (cough sensitive and useless) device can detect such failings.

2. It also doesn't work? Buy a new PC because putting a 3rd motherboard in this one would be dumb. (CPU from 2012).

Any ideas as to why this is happening, though? Just curious as to whether anyone else has experienced such nonsense.

Edit: My computer crashed and when it came back the Ethernet connection is working. This happened earlier when I reset the modem but broke when I ran a network diagnosis - "resetting network adapter..." And then borked. This is interesting, sure, but clearly something is wrong and I've got no idea what. Potentially requiring resetting / reinstalling Windows 10. I'm waiting and saving for Black Friday to buy a new PC but this is obviously not ideal. 2 months on wifi won't kill me enough to deal with the ton of things I'd have to do to return my PC to its current state but meh.

Just bought tacks to mount this flat Ethernet cord, too lol. Probably caused by the clods I live with that can't go 20 seconds without tripping over the bright white cord that's not even lifted above the ground. Oh well. I'll test the ethernet and get another if necessary.

Solution
Ethernet cables are so cheap I always have a spare brand new one in the house.

Although you now think it is your pc it is not uncommon for ethernet cable to fail like you describe. They will randomly work on some equipment but work perfectly on others. In most cases the problem is the internal connection inside the rj45 plug between the wires and the pins of the jack.

You can easily damage these if somehow you pulled on the cable a little too hard and it because just slightly loose.

It also happens because of all the fake ethernet cable on the market. CCA cable has issue with the copper and aluminum expanding at different rates and becoming loose. Those very thin cable the wire is too small and tend to also not connect...

The devices to really test a cable can pass data at certified rates are not affordable by home users so it is best just keep a extra cable around...being sure it is pure copper with wire gauge between 22-24
