Hi the problem is my pc just shuts off randomly sometimes after a couple of mins, at first i thought one of my ssd was failing so i installed another ssd and installed windows 10 but the problem still persisted for me it just shuts off with no warning and when it does run its so laggy its like running a windows 95 machine. I have tried running from different plug sockets, different cables, resitting parts, rewiring cables , running on bare components etc and could not work it out. Now i went into my bios today and all my 4 cores was showing at 95+ temperature and this pc had only been on a few seconds also when i touched my H100 heat sink it was so hot i almost burnt my hand so do you think this is why my pc keeps shutting down/failing to boot because its overheating? Should i replace the thermal compound or buy a different cpu fan or could it be the psu? The machine is about 5 years old. Thanks any help would be great i plan on going to the shop tomorrow for parts

Solution
That looks normal. That's how that compound looks when cool.
I have use several brands and I don't see a difference. They all work just fine.
ARCTIC MX-4
Noctua NT-H1
Cooler Master High Performance Thermal Paste
Thermalright CF3
I would never spend 3 x the price on some new paste just to get 1 or 2 degrees difference in cooling.
Make sure you have a good airflow through the case, that's is more important.

Be careful with the black nob on top of the motherboard.
you need to verify if the h100 is working or not. may the pump has failed.
or if you need it to up and running quickly, you can get a aftermarket cpu cooler like the cm hyper 212 for 30~ish dollar.
never run the system without a working cooler.

hope that helps.

hi guys thanks for the fast replys yes the h100 spins up and all fans work etc just removed the heatsink from my cpu and it looks like alot of the compound has worn off overtime. Do you think this is the reason why its overheating and shutting down then? please check link for photos of cpu and heatsink. Also which is the best compound to buy out of artic 5, mx-4, thermal grizzly etc...... also whats an easy way of cleaning off the remaining compound.

Thanks
