Using a 6-pin Y adapter.

So I currently have integrated Intel i5 graphics and its horrible! So I've been thinking of getting a graphics card and have my eye on a Zotac Geforce GTX 950 2GB. My motherboard is HP and it doesn't have a 24 pin for the PSU, it has a 6 pin. The PSU only has one 6-pin and I need one for the GPU as well. So I thought I would need to look for a new PSU, well any I can find use the 24-pin. Oh great, now I need a new motherboard as well. May as well get a new PC. Then I got thinking, there is an unused SATA connector, so I what if I just get SATA to 6-pin adapter. I did some Googling and found that that won't work because of blah blah blah. Then I thought of a Y adapter for the 6-pin. So finally, here is my question...

The 6-pin on the PSU that powers the motherboard, can I just get a Y adapter for that and it can power both the motherboard and the GPU?

Solution

The one I linked if you use it to use a new PSU on your old motherboard is safe. Its properly configured for it to work and run that board. Then your new PSU can power any GPU you want with its built in 6 pin/8pin connectors.

Personally I hate to use adapters but I realize in this case economically its the only way you will get this to work.

No such adapter exists. Even if it did thats a dangerous option as is using any adapters on your PSU to power a GPU.

If you're insistent on using that motherboard you can by this

https://www.amazon.com/24-Pin-6-Pin-Power-Adapter-Compaq/dp/B01NAHMULC

To use a new PSU with your motherboard, then a good PSU would have the proper connections for your GPU.

As for PSUs you should look for the Corsair CX450M, its good quality and often cheap.

No such adapter exists. While that IS a 6 pin splitter it is not pinned or wired properly to do what you want to do. Should you use it you will not only fry your motherboard you will fry your GPU. That is specifically for 6 pin PCIe cables, not for your PSUs power adapter.

If you want to keep your current equipment you need a new PSU and the adapter I linked above.

He should have said..."No such safe adapter exists"

Existence of that adapter does not mean its a good idea.

I know, you've already said that above.
