Is it good to have a hdd and ssd in a laptop using the optical drive or convert the hdd to external hdd? Which will make the drives live longer? Also, if I want to save power is it safe to disable optical drive while the hdd is in it?

Solution
If you don't need the optical, then replacing with a green HDD for mass storage is good idea, yes a little more power draw from battery, but can extend life of SSD, especialy if you are making lots of small file writes overtime can degrade SSDs, while doesn't bither HDDs. As for disabling optical, why bother, its not using power if not use dor if hdd is installed or not.
