Hey guys,

I'm using the stock cooler with my i7- 4790K and my idle temps right now are around 67C. I think these are way to high. I definitely need a cooler. Already ordered the single fan Cooler Master 212X. Will this be sufficient for my CPU? Is it worth it to pay extra for the dual fan? Note that I haven't OC'd it and I don't plan to.

Solution

The CPU temperature should be addressed with a new cooler. The Cooler Master Hyper 212X should handle a moderate overclock. If you are unsure about overclocking in general, then try the motherboard BIOS automated overclock. Then select an 4.6 - 4.8 GHz overclock, and...

Your'e totally right, but these temps aren't very promising to be honest, and made me a bit hesitant to consider ocing, especially that I can't buy a high-end cooler right now. I might give it a try with the Hyper 212x though, but I'm not sure it'll be able to handle higher oc's to be honest.

Awesome, thanks for your help, yeah I'll definitely look into that asa I get the cooler and try to improve the airflow since I don't think I'm doing it right tbh, but yeah I definitely need to check some guides to help map out the airflow.

Usual consensus people go for K cpus is to overclock but it also has a higher base clock and turbo which i imagine for some is appealing enough to spend a little more over the non K model.

That i7 stock with HT in modern games will beat an i5 that is heavily overclocked and will also beat an 8600K. Hyperthreading is making a huge impact recently especially for that one primary core.

Overclocking isn't hard to do and keep stable, long as your temps are good and dont get too greedy :)

If you are unsure about overclocking in general, then try the motherboard BIOS automated overclock. Then select an 4.6 - 4.8 GHz overclock, and give it a try. And if you want to go back, just enter the BIOS and reset it to manufacturer defaults. If you want do do more then you can look into it a bit more thoroughly.

The I7-4790K turbo boost is 4.4 GHz so you would only be overclocking 0.2 - 0.4 GHz. If the CPU temperatures rise to your former levels, then simply reset the BIOS, and the overclock will be wiped.

If later on you decide to overclock, you should stress test the overclock to show that it is stable and the temperature is under control.

Thank you so much for taking the time to help a fellow newbie oc'er. I appreciate you. I'll definitely look into the automated OC'ing and will see how it goes from there.

Yeah, I think I'll give it a go and try to follow terry's advice on that. Thank you so much for taking the time to help!

If you can get a cryorig h7 is usually the same price as a 212x or a little more but is a better cooler and would allow for a better oc.
