High CPU temp? i5-8400

My CPU idles around 47C and 75C under load with seti@home. I feel like my temps should be a lot cooler. Using Noctua NH-U9S cooler and IC graphite thermal pad TIM. Also have plenty of air flow in case, 2 intake, 3 exhaust. I took off the cooler twice and made sure the pad was seated correctly twice and screwed everything down nice and snug.

Solution

There are these graphite thermal pads out right now that do offer similar performance to a thermal paste, I'm guessing the OP has one of those.

75 under load isn't a bad temp for Coffee Lake, especially with how aggressive TurboBoost is, basically throwing TDP out the window, and motherboards being overly aggressive on setting stock voltages. You could try reseating the cooler with the paste it came with, but I don't think it will get much cooler. If you want to get temps down you may have to see if you an undervolt the CPU, or get drastic and do a delid. I wouldn't bother though, 75 celsius is perfectly safe for long term usage, you're still 25 degrees below the throttling point.

I just noticed your idle temps of 47 degrees c..that just does not sound right as it should be in the low to mid 30's degrees C...

As to Finstar's comments, the 8400 does not run hot or in general on the 8th gen, unless overclocking and then a good CPU cooler at stock is more than capable of keeping Intel running cool.

Just to rule out the IC pad being the issue, have you tried standard TIM like MX4 or something similar?
