Technician covered standoffs with masking tape

I understand that they did it so that if the standoffs rust, it doesn't seize with the motherboard. I'm just concerned about fire hazards. Is it possible that the tapes could short the motherboard and cause fire?

What technician did that? As in which store did you take it to?

I’m not aware of the practice of using masking tape on standoff’s. Why would they be concerned about them rusting? If they used the standard motherboard stand off screws then you shouldn’t see any rust. Those screws are usually brass with a nickle coating to eliminate rusting and short circuit issues.

Did they use different screws that did not come with the case? As in steel screws? As for fire safety, I would play it safe and remove the tape. I doubt they would catch fire but I wouldn’t want any tape other than electrical tape touching my bare components.

1. I've never heard of this procedure.

2. If they assembled it, how do you know there is masking tape in there?

3. Rust? Are you using this PC on a fishing boat in the North Atlantic?

I noticed the tapes when I got home and was tinkering around. I called them to ask why it was there and they said the thing about rusting. They said they used the standoffs from the case.

I wanted to get rid of it too but returning it to them is quite difficult due to a very long commute. I can do it myself, but it has an AIO cooler which could make the disassembly difficult.

I'm just thinking about whether it's worth going through the trouble of disassembly just to remove the tapes.

The tape is only on the underside. Basically, it looks like before placing the motherboard, they covered each standoff in tape. I don't know how neat it is but, it's possible that it's just one tape draped over each standoff. It's possible that they didn't bother to press down the tape and excess might be touching the board.

Ya, that’s not really how that should look. It looks like they didn’t even use standoff’s, man. The board is far too close to the case itself. Can you see what the other side of the motherboard tray looks like? Just remove the other side panel. I would put money that they just screwed the board into the tray directly and used some sort of tape (it’s white so it’s either masking tape or Teflon tape) to create a “barrier” between the case and the board. Take a picture of the other side for us

Thanks guys! I just left the house, I'll send a picture later. Not much to see on the other side, though. I believe the standoffs are there because the board is a bit elevated and it's stiff when I push it down the screws. If it would short out, wouldn't it have done so by now? I've used it for a good 12 hours or more already doing lots of benchmark. I'll check again later. Cheers!
