6-Pin to 8-Pin Adapter for 1080Ti ?

Hey so I currently have an Antec VP650P(v2) PSU at 650w with which I'm powering my current GTX 970 which has a 8-pin and a 6-pin connector. I'm planning to buy a GTX 1080Ti soon and it says it needs 2 x 8-pin connectors.

A little bit of research revealed that the MSI Gaming X version I'm planning to buy includes a 6 pin-to-8 pin adapter in the box.

So I'm wondering can I just plug the one 8 pin connector I have and use the adapter on the 6 pin? Will that be sufficient or is the adapter some kind of jerry-rigging solution?

It's said the recommended PSU wattage for 1080Ti is 600w and mine is 650w so I didn't plan on having to buy a new PSU but the connector thing is bothering me.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

People always complain about the adaptors but I think if your PSU is powerful enough, the adaptor is fine.
They wouldn't supply them in the box if they were dangerous.

The "adapters" we recommend against are trying to provide GPU power via a SATA power cable.
