Is it worth upgrading the video card or should i wait for Black Friday.

Hello.

I know you probably hear this every year however i am really excited on upgrading my video card so that i can run games smoother but since the Eithereum got so popular, prices for video cards were so high i just felt it was not worth it.

To start with, ill show you my PC specs:
AMD Athlon II X4 740 (Trinity on FM2)
8GB RAM DDR3 1333 Mhz
MSI A55M-E33 Mobo
2x 1TB WD HDD running at 7200 RPM
Geforce GT720 with 2GB of video ram;
550W PSu without a PCI-e connector from Inter-Tech;

Before the GT 720 i had a Radeon 7750 and a VGA monitor (1024x768). I replaced the monitor last year to a FHD one because of BlackFriday and then my graphics card died but i didn't have the money.

I'm not that much into graphics, and i have issues with seeing colors anyway but i play games like Battlefield 4, 1, Counter Strike GO, Empyrion or 7 Days to Die and hence i have a FHD monitor they barely run on low, in fact i have to lower the resolution to HD for 30-40FPS.

I kept scouting for video cards and given my PC and my budget i put my eyes on the GTX 1050 (the RX 550 and 560 i found at the same price with 4GB of VRAM but i understand they don't perform better than the 1050 with 2GB.
I tested the games on my girlfriends laptop and it has the GTX 1050 with 4GB but BF does not use more than 1.5GB of VRAM on FHD, ULTRA so i figured the 2GB version would be enough. Again, my PC is a bottleneck anyway for anything, i just want a boost in FPS.

My question is, should I buy a Inno3D GeForce GTX 1050 Twin X2 2GB for 152 Dollars now, or should i wait for Black Friday and see if prices drop ?

I know prices are not as high like in previous months, but seeing what happens with the RAM prices i doubt, companies will lower the prices for these any further so i have a feeling i'll see the same results.

Lastly, i appreciate any feedback on this but i remind you that i am also aware i have a crap PC overall, yet most likely I will not change it for the next two years until i gather money for a better build.

You can look for different answers all you want, but that doesn't make us wrong. Here is a sad fact. You have a garbage PSU. You said it was an accident, that you didn't know it didn't have any PCIe plugs. I get that. I also understand that money isn't just easy to throw around and sometimes the budget says you can't do whatever you want. The issue is you are talking about installing a bigger GPU which is going to put a bigger strain on that (garbage) PSU shaped object. Believe it or not I'm trying to do you a favor. Plugging in your hard earned GPU into a (garbage) PSU isn't a good idea. The last thing I want to happen to you is...

I'm wary about doing a gpu upgrade with that terrible psu. If I had to choose between the 2 I would say whichever one is cheaper since they both perform quite close to eachother. (the 1050 is on average a bit faster but at max 10%). Either way your psu and cpu are the most limiting factor. The psu because it's simple but terrible and you wouldn't want your system to be fried and the cpu because it's quite weak but shouldn't hold a 1050 or 560 back too much.

I have an issue with that PSU as well. I wouldn't spend lots of money on a GPU, and then use a "550W" PSU that has no PCIe plug. This means it's really more like a 300W PSU. Before spending lots of money you barely have on parts, I'd replace the part that is garbage and can fry/kill the new expensive part. I know this isn't something you want to hear but that PSU needs to be replaced first.

Hello,

First of all, thank you for the answer. About the PSU, i bought it 2 years ago and it was 50 dollars, it was actually a mistake because i didn't want to go for Zalman or Corsair as many said its more the brand than anything but then again, i didn't notice it had no PCI E connector. Either way, i agree with you that the PSU is not good at all but i'm looking for different answers.

I'm pretty sure many of you speculate price changes before seasons such as big sales or before new video card releases, and i was really wondering if now this is a good time or better times will come. I keep looking for articles from Toms and Anandtech or CPU overclock because i find them interesting. Nevertheless i have put in doubt the PSU issue many times before considering any upgrades and most likely i will change my PSU but see, with that prices are more or less the same, where prices for say, RAM or video cards always fluctuate.

Hi.

Thank you for the answer. I actually started reading about the RTX 2080 and am thinking of waiting for the new models to appear. I've also looked into Euthereum mining and it seems its not all that great and shiny because of a few issues with how it works (idk just Reddit) but anyways i think i'll wait for the mainstream GPU's to appear and i might just get better prices, until then i'll be able to look for a better PSU.

Could you please tell me what did you upgrade to and if you found any other games that needed more than 2 gigs?

Overall i am an AMD fan and given that the RX 560 4GB is the same as the 2GB GTX 1050 one it is tempting but then again in the games i was looking for, it wasn't doing any better.

The issue I have with this is you linked a .ro domain. That's Romanian. I'm sorry, but I know USA sales and what not. I don't know what holidays you have in Romania. You might want to ask on a .ro forum. Local info is usually better than something someone heard one time.

My vote is that you wait for whenever there is a good Romanian sale going and buy a new PSU. A good one. Then save up more money and buy a GPU when the next sale happens. On the bright side because time will have past you should be able to get a better GPU than the ones you are considering now.

Thanks again for your answer. First of all, i'm not claiming anyone is wrong and if i seemed arrogant, sorry for that, its not my intention. I actually appreciate any posts i get and its also the reason i go on Tom's Hardware because all the posts are pretty informative. The reason I added the link to the site its because on other posts I read, they asked for the country or site so I figured i should have my post covered from most angles but was expecting to end up at the PSU, but i guess i didn't phrase my question properly.

But from what i read from you guys, i'll just get a PowerSupply and will invest in a GPU at the end of the year when the new releases appear and probably the mining will be less popular.
