I am planning on buying a new laptop for a bit of gaming and some light video editing, my choices narrowed down to 2 laptops. One with a i5-7300HQ, 8GB of RAM and a GTX 1060. The other has a i7-8750H processor, 16GB of RAM and a GTX 1050ti. Is it worth to get the better gpu instead of a better precessor?

Solution

The i5-7300HQ is a straight quad core, so four threads. There are some games on the market that show significant gains from having more than four threads, and that trend should continue in the future. The consoles have many threads, newer PCs are coming with four or more threads, so as the computers from 2012-2015 or so start getting replaced, more and more people will have more than 4 threads. Game developers will start targeting them instead of people still using dual core CPUs.

How much are you spending? Might be able to find something with both.

If your primary goal is gaming, then the GPU is probably the better choice. However, if you are playing some the newer games like Battlefield 1 or Battlefield 5 you might want the CPU.

The problem with many gaming laptops is that their external structure and their ventilation capacity are not up to their internal components, so they heat up and are far from their theoretical performance.

Therefore, in addition to its CPU and GPU it is important to ensure its ventilation capacity.

Having said that, I would advise you to buy a laptop with a next-generation I5-8250U or I7-8550U processor because they consume less, last longer, and heat up less.

I would search only between MSI, HP or Lenovo brands. Particularly Acer would avoid that usually suffer from the heating problem.
