Looking for fast SSD with low power usage

I know I might be looking for a unicorn, but my Dell Latitude 7490 came with a Toshiba XG5 512GB NVMe drive....and it sucks. The writes speeds are TERRIBLE. Firmware is up to date, tried 'hacked' drivers, etc.....nothing close to the 'Class 40 SSD' that this is advertised to be. Getting SATA speeds out of it....

Been fighting with Dell to get a different drive, but they keep sending me the same XG5 drive. I'm going to bite the bullet and get my own drive.

I would like something with some speed, but since I do value battery life....would be willing to have something that is not the absolute fastest not take a huge battery hit. For example; I think I saw the Samsung 960 Pro uses less power than a 970 Pro.

Any input is greatly appreciated!

awesome. when I do build, that might be my drive

I would suggest you run a benchmark of your own to see if your SSD is matching the benchmark averages (or within 5-10%). I'm not familiar with Dell mobos, and it might be an idea to check it out too. You don't want to upgrade, then discover that it's the mobo / chipset (or some weird Dell config) that's holding you back.

I realized I only have an AS SSD benchmark from my 256GB XG5 on my XPS 9370 and a PM981 on my Latitude 7490....but results were pretty close. Results are significant on the writes.
