So I'm making the move to to 1440p (monitor linked below) and I'm in need of a new CPU.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01LLGLG7W/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I currently own an rtx 2080, so pushing high frames shouldn't be too much of a problem, but I want a CPU that won't hold it back at 1440p, as I do enjoy my competitive games.

now, the 8700k has shot up by £100 here in the Uk making it around £400-430 and the 2700x has stayed the same at around £300.

I'm thinking even though the 2700x is slower for gaming, I could just sell it in 2020, and buy the 4700x....but with the 8700k, I'm probably stuck as the 9900k would probably be a sidestep in terms of a performance boost.

I already have a h105 cooler

Yes, but we are mostly talking about frames above 100/125+. At those fps, you cannot feel the difference with your naked eye, unless you have a screen counter.

8700k for 1440p 144Hz.

4k, don't matter which of these cpus as frame rates aren't pushed high enough for a cpu bottleneck.

More fps = more cpu usage, doesn't matter what resolution if fps is high enough. 8700k will be better in higher frame rates.

144hz was an example how 1440p was once considered a more gpu orientated resolution and now GPUs are pushing this resolution over 100fps where CPU bottlenecks are. Its hard to say where CPU bottleneck is exactly with fps amounts but it'll be around a 100 somewhere.

Because 4k is so demanding, no GPU can push it to 100fps. Once this happens, CPUs at this time will run into the same problem now with 1440p.

Should have said 8700k would have an edge in higher frame rates.

I’d wait for 9th gen, last I read is it’s due early October. Intel made a big jump from 7th to 8th gen with the i5 8600k matching or slightly beating the i7 7700k for gaming.

Intel are mixing up the cores and threads again with 9th gen so we may see a decent step up.

Personally if pushing high FPS which you are I would get the best cpu your budget allows, games only get more demanding. As for AM4 in 2020, I take that with a pinch of salt, yes AMD commit to keeping AM4 socket but they very suspiciously never say current motherboards will support future cpu’s. Look at Intel and socket 1151 where 6th, 7th, 8th & 9th gen all use the same socket but 8th & 9th gen need a different chipset and cannot run on motherboards that support 6th & 7th gen.

hmm...I could wait until oct I guess but I don't want to get into the "new stuffs coming out soon lets continue to wait" mode. With the current price of the 8700/8700k there's no way I'm paying a £130+ premium over the 2700x, it's just not worth it to me. from looking at benchmarks, the 2700x is only around 4% slower at 1440p, and if it falls behind too much, I ASSUME i can upgrade to the 4700x in the future.

+ it would be nice to support a company that was able to drag Intel off charging £300 for 4c8t cpus

You'll be fine with Ryzen. Regarding memory for it, to better improve your experience search topics on ram with Samsung chips vs Micron vs Hynix.

Support for Hynix and Micron has improved but Samsung's are still better.

As I said. You wont find much difference around those kind of resolutions. You should be fine.
