IDE/SATA External Drive connected by USB to computer smokes when powered on.

I connected an old IDE/Sata external drive to my laptop using a USB adapter. Worked fine the first couple times, but now when I turn on the power, it smokes on the board above the power connector. Is there any hope of getting my files off this drive?

If it's smoking....and obviously it sounds like you don't have file access....I don't think there's going to be any easy way to get the files off other than having it looked at professionally.
