Hi!

I'm thinking of buying a new computer since my current PC has started to fail on me. But I'm stuck choosing between the 2700x and 8700. And both of them cost next to the same in my build.

I game on 1440p at 144hz, planning on buying the 1080 ti.

As in the title, I work 50/50 on my current PC with blender, photoshop, Unity/Unreal and so on. And game 50/50.

What do you guys think? The 2700x is better for "blender" but the 8700 is better in games.

Solution
2700X is just better as mentioned above^. I don't know if you included aftermarket cooling in the build but the i7 would need it or it'll run into heat problems and start throttling.

And I guess that you can quite easily overclock the CPU if you want?

If you plan to OC, I would rather go for the 2700 and buy a decent cooler.
If you do not plan to OC, 2700x is the better option.

One more interesting stuff is the 1700 and 1700x pricing, at least here, where I live. 1700 is about the same price as 2600x. Perhaps, this is also interesting to you as well.
