4790k runs hot with NH-D15S

Hello. Today I upgraded my rig with Asus Maximus Hero VII, 4790k and 16GB of RAM. I applied NT-H1 thermal paste. When I first turned on PC I noticed that fans were running bit loud (Case is Zalman R1 with five be quite! Silent wings 2 fans). I opened up HW monitor and saw that CPU was at 85C at one point (there is no overclock, everything is stock). Idle temps were around 48C and ambient temp was around 21C. I decided to run Cinebench and see what's going to happen and CPU immediately hit 99C so I turned it off. I checked back of a motherboard to see if cooler bracket was fitted right and to my eyes it was in place. Then I checked if whole cooler was not moving and it wasn't. My only guess now that I somehow attached it wrong to the bracket, but that would be strange since it is kind of an easy process to do attach cooler the right way. Maybe You people have any idea what could have went wrong here? Thank You.

I think your heatsink paste is either incorrectly applied, or your heatsink/heatsink fan is just not enough.

Intel states the 4790K has a TDP of 88W
Noctua states the NH-D15S can handle a TDP of 95W
so should be fine right ?

sure if the cpu stayed at 88W which it doesn't. at 4.4ghz it runs hot..
reapply properly (as demonstrated by expert video on youtube not unknown users)
and make sure your cpu fast is running up to speed normally

if the problem continues I would change the Heatsink/fan for something better.(I.e. a heatsink that can handle 150W on LGA1150

the 4790K is known for being hot but there are a few solutions.

Had this issue with my FX 8320 once where i had to factory reset the BIOS as my voltage settings, which were fine for a long time, caused the CPU to run at 90+. That could be a CPU issue or a motheboard issue. Try resetting the BIOS and turn off Intel Turbo Boost and see if they come down first. Also check to see what speed the CPU is running at in task manager. Should be very low and not stuck at 4.0+ Ghz all the time.

Thank you for your help, I'll try that as soon as possible, but how could my CPU hit +99C in cinebench in seconds with such a beefy cooler?

as drtweak said, voltage, especially if temps are climbing that fast and you know the cooler is seated properly
download intel's XTU (Extreme Tuning Utility) and you can adjust bios settings from windows - and you can also monitor temps from XTU at the same time (in the 3 or 4 window boxes, you'll see a small wrench icon in the corners of each box - clik on it and select all sensors)

Jeeez, the worst I could ever done... No thermal paste applied... I had to remove cooler because i could not reach cpu fan header, so i removed, cleaned paste and forgot to put it on...
Sorry for such a lame mistake and thank you all guys
