HDMI sound stops when second monitor plugged in

Hi, I have a Radeon R7 200 series graphics card which has 3 outputs - HDMI, DVI, and VGA. I plug in my computer monitor via the DVI port and my TV via the HDMI port. If I have only the TV plugged in, it receives and outputs sound through the HDMI cable. But if I plug in the monitor via DVI, the TV stops receiving sound through the HDMI cable.

I've tried fiddling with the settings, including making the TV my "primary display" but nothing helps. Only having the DVI cable unplugged will let me get sound to the TV.

Any idea what I can do to get audio to my TV while having my monitor plugged in? I want one person to be able to watch netflix on the TV while someone else works on the computer, so unplugging the DVI all the time is not really a good option.

To provide a little more info, when I check on "playback devices" it only lists 2: my speakers in the audio jack, and the AMD High definition audio device. But the second one usually lists my monitor rather than the TV, but even if I get it to list the TV (such as by booting up with only the TV plugged in and then plugging in the monitor), I still lose the sound as soon as the DVI cable gets plugged in.

in windows sound settings u should be able to change it

In Windows display, you would identify the monitors as the your PC monitor and the TV. I assume that you are duplicating the PC monitor (which is connected by DVI-D).

The DVD-D doesn't carry audio. The HDMI does.

That is the only scenario that I can think of that would explain your situation.

If the above is true then using another monitor cable HDMI OR DisplayPort would allow both Monitor and TV to have audio.

Thanks, but the HDMI is the one plugged into the TV, while the DVI goes to the monitor. I want the sound to go to my TV, not to my monitor (I have some speakers plugged into the audio jack for when I want the sound at my computer desk). So I WANT it going through the HDMI and the problem is that I think it's trying to send sound over the DVI and NOT over the HDMI.

I just tried plugging in the monitor with VGA and keeping the TV on HDMI, and that works! The TV gets sound when I do that. It's only when I switch the VGA for DVI that the sound fails. I wouldn't have a problem if the video card tried to send sound to both destinations, but whenever the DVI is plugged in it stops sending sound over the HDMI cable.

Also for clarity, I am extending my desktop, not duplicating it.

Also, in case it's relevant, the DVI cable I'm using is actually a DVI/HDMI cable, so it plugs into the DVI output on the graphics card and then into the HDMI input on the monitor. The graphics card does not have a second HDMI output - only 1 HDMI, 1 DVI, and 1 VGA.

As long as the problem is solved in your case.
