So I went to a friend's shop here yesterday (I'm not from US).

Bought all the stuff for my new PC except processor as it was out of stock.

Ok so I went to the biggest dealer and asked for i5 8400. He also said it was out of stock and gave me an i3 8100.
He said he'll exchange deducting $5 and will give me i5 when it's here.

Today some dealer told me that i5 8400 price went up from $212 to $272, rising by $50.

Now what should I do???

Keep the i3 8100 or buy the overpriced i5? How much difference is there?

I'll mainly use this machine for gaming and I want faster multi tasking.

Also Adobe and light video editing as well.

Please help me out.

I'd say you should never call that person your friend again. there is no store in america where an i5-8400 should be sold for $272. you can currently get it from a number of retailers for <$220, I'm looking at amazon and newegg, both sell it for <$220. Next I want to know why you want an i5-8400 for $272 when you can get a i5-8600 for $229.00

I would hold onto the 8100 for now and grab a 9th gen i5 when they release in October. It may only be the K series but the price may be better then the 8400 and would have a higher clock speed and if you have a Z370 motherboard then you'd be able to overclock it.

Anything above $200 for the 8400 is a ripoff, that CPU should be at $180.

Normally I'd agree with you, but it's looking more and more likely that this "9th generation" release is going to be a paper launch in october, with chips maybe being availible in january. I don't think this is an option to a guy who got roped into buying an I3, when he wanted an i5

Well that sucks, I have a G5400 as a placeholder for the 9600K which I was expecting to get around late Oct, early Nov. If the prices of the i5's are in the upper 270-280 area the OP might as well grab the 8700 as they'll have the extra threads for editing, or return the MB/8100 if possible and go R5 2600/B450.

I mentioned that I'm NOT from USA and we import stuff so the commission by dealers + duty and everything makes it expensive compared to the rest of the world. This $212 is the least price I was getting.

For us here, the price of 8400 will still be the same or maybe reduce by $20 only, that's it. The newly imported i5 let's say 9th gen will be in my opinion $300+ ...
