I bought a new SSD to use as boot drive and installed windows 10. I successfully booted from the SSD but my desktop shortcuts were not there. I can see and access my HDD though.

Assuming your HDD was your old Windows boot drive, and you have not formatted it, your shortcuts will be on your old drive
@ C:\Users\<username>\Desktop,

Copy that folder from the old HDD to the same folder location on the new SSD and you should be good to go.

As an example, lets assume your old HDD is now drive D:. Your SSD is C:. Your username is leo.

The command would be

copy d:\users\leo\desktop c:\users\leo\desktop

You may also want to copy documents, videos, pictures and music from your HDD to your SSD if they haven't already been copied or stored somewhere else.
