Do you get better performance with say 4x4gb sticks of ram vs 2 gb sticks? Assuming they are the same type.

I should probably add since I know that 8gb sticks and higher are good for expanding in the future. Assuming I'd only need 16gb total ram for the build, would 4x4gb outperform 2x8gb?

Your post title asks something completely different than your actual post.

2x4 GB is better than 1x8 GB because the two sticks will operate in dual channel. 4x4 vs 2x8 shouldn't result in much of a difference, unless you have a high end platform with quad channel memory.

# of memory channels is basically how many different RAM sticks your PC can access in parallel (at the same time). Most mainstream CPUs are dual channel: they can access two sticks at once so it's optimal to have at least two installed to run in dual channel. High end platforms (AMD Threadripper CPUs, Intel's 'X' series chips) are quad channel, so they can access 4 sticks at once so you'd want at least 4 sticks installed for optimal performance.

No, number of slots can be different than number of channels, because you can have multiple slots for each channel. Most mainstream mobos are dual channel with two slots per channel, for a total of 4 slots.

If you list your CPU I can tell you how many memory channels it has, but there's a very own chance it's 2.
