3.95 gb usable 8gb ram installed

So I recently bought 2 Corsair Value select 4 gb ram sticks @2400Mhz, and installed them into my new x470 GIGABYTE board. The problem I'm having is that it says in BIOS that there is indeed 8 gigabytes of ram running at stock clock speeds, but in the Properties of This PC it says only 3.95 gb usable, and I'm curious if anyone knows if this ram is incompatible or if this is another issue. The ram is not on the compatibility list but after research I read that it could still work even if it is not on the list? Not entirely sure however if that is true. I've unchecked the max memory setting in the msconfig and I'm not sure what else to try. The sticks are in the slots securely also.
 
That could be due to incompatibility with the motherboard, Windows showing incorrect info or RAM allocated to hardware (iGPU).
Could you post your system components?
Is the OS a 64-bit version?
Check the RAM speed in the BIOS, make sure is running at rated speed.
If there is any BIOS update for your motherboard, then update the BIOS.

Specs:
CPU: Ryzen 5 2600
Memory: Corsair Value select 2x 4gb clocked @2400 Mhz Checked bios is running at proper speed
Moba: GIGABYTE X470 AORUS ULTRA GAMING
OS: Windows 10 home 64 bit
Graphics Card: Evga Gefore GTX 1060 6 gb
 
Make sure Windows is up to date, since there was a memory bug that was introduced then patched.
Make sure you have the latest BIOS

Go to msconfig
Go to the Boot tab > Advanced options > make sure Maximum memory is checked.
Click OK then click Apply then OK, reboot.

Go back to msconfig (to undo the previous changes)
Go to the Boot tab > Advanced options > make sure Maximum memory is unchecked.
Click OK then click Apply then OK, reboot.

I just updated the BIOS and nothing has changed so far, I attempted to try what you said about the msconfig but that did not work either, is it possible that it has to do with my os?
 
If you already tried on both A & B channels, try each module individually in each of the RAM sockets and check the hardware reserved memory is in each instance.
Channel A: slot 1 (1st from 24-pin power) and slot 2 (2nd from CPU)
Channel B: slot 3 (2nd from 24-pin power) and slot 4 (1st from CPU

This would help you identify if it is faulty RAM or simply not compatible with your motherboard or if it is a Windows issue.

I just tried this out, both still leading to it saying I only have 3.95 gb usable. Also just to see I'm plugging in only 1 ram stick in instead of 2. But for some reason its not posting at all when I do that it only boots when both are in there.

Update: I found that putting the ram into channel A doesnt work at all, pc won't post when the ram is in that channel it only posts in Channel B.
 
Channel A should be the preferred setup though you can run it in B without issue. I'm starting to think you've got a dead stick. The SPD of your DIMMs is 2400 and per your mobo's manual, that's a non-OC'd rating. There shouldn't be a reason you're having this much difficulty getting it to work.

That's what I'm starting to think, but it says that there is 8 gb installed. Would it recognize the ram of the dead stick still?
 
Maybe you should try resetting the BIOS to factory defaults.
Unplug the power cord from the power outlet, press the power button for 15 seconds.
Locate the clear CMOS jumper (CLR_CMOS) and use a screwdriver to touch the two pins for a 5 seconds.
Also you could remove the CMOS battery.
Place both RAM modules on channel A, connect the power cord and power on.
Does the ram works on that channels?


Each stick of ram should work on any slot, since that motherboard supports single channel memory. It supposed to be detected automatically.
I would replace a motherboard that refuses to boot with only one stick of RAM.


RAM should be detected automatically, if placed on channel A or if you happen to place on the secondary B channel.
