Is my mobo dead or the CPU?

Hey guys.
I've had an Asus M5A88-V EVO with an FX 6300 @ 4.5GHz for the past 5 or so years.
Recently the setup started acting up, it would sometimes load to default OC profile when I hard restarted it (but only sometimes) which I always just reverted back to the OC profile I set up. I've never had any problems with my setup and the OC was always stable.
I have a beefy cooler with two fans and a third one next to them for exhaust out of the case, also two on the top and bottom - heat is not an issue.
Today I was about to switch to a different system and wanted to boot from a DVD but it wouldn't load (black screen). Now, couple of restarts later, the system won't boot. It has power (led on the mobo and gpu) and the fans are spinning but it won't beep/post and boot into the SSD's OS. My mmonitors don't react to the CPU being turned on.
I replaced the CMOS battery + cut the power / removed the battery to reset everything but it didn't help.
I'd like to know if these are the symptoms of not only a dead MOBO but also a CPU?
TBH at this point it would be better if the CPU was dead, but I want to avoid the hussle of returning the part that turns out to be ok.
Any suggestion on how what might actualy have died? Or is there a fix for this?

EDIT:
I'm pulling the setup apart ATM, nothing seems to help so far.

Try reseating the memory. Remove each stick of RAM one at a time, clean the contacts, blow out the slot, firmly reinstall the stick, and repeat for the remaining RAM. Then try a reboot. If still no luck, try the RAM one at a time.

Do you have a case speaker? Here is an example.

Yeah I have the speaker. So far the only reasons I see could be either static or... thermal paste giving up? It kinda crumbles off of the CPU and the heatsink as I pull them apart. But still, the thermals were always fine.

Will do. I have to get the thermal paste from my old house. Do you know if I can use an old thermal paste? I have a sealed one from when I bought the PC, can it go bad?
Will do breadboarding later today, what should I look for exactly / what if nothing help and the system still doesn't respond?

As long as the thermal paste hasn't dried up it should be fine.

If you go through the bread boarding with out any signs of life, then it is either a the CPU or motherboard. You can try another working CPU to test it. But if it will not POST, chances are it is the motherboard.

You can also try removing the memory and starting it up. Without memory the case speaker should beep repeatedly.

Well, the CPU gets warm (as it should i guess), if that says anything. Still no beeps, even without the RAM in. I'm going to order a new MOBO, since the seller is less likely to complain about a return.
I'll let you know what comes of it.
If anyone has anything else to comment, I'd appreciate it :)
BTW, can you put the speak in wrong way? I tried both ways, but I'm just curious.

Yes you can. The case speaker isn't keyed. So it can go on 180 degrees wrong direction. Some do indicate the #1 slot which may help inf you have the motherboard manual with a pin out.

The mobo is taken apart and the new one is on the way.
Got another question though. As I was removing the cooler backplate, there was a plastic transparent sticker on it (covering the whole one side) I assume for isolation. The sticker/foil tore and came off. Should I still reuse the backplate or get a new one?

I'm not sure of the transparent sticker that you are referring to. But if you are getting another motherboard, it will likely have another back plate. What CPU cooler did you have? If the back plate was specific to the CPU cooler, then you may be able to get a new back plate. Or you can replace the CPU cooler.

Yeah the backplate came with the cooler, I might get a new one.
Another idea would be to cut out an isolation pad for the current back plate out of silicone, would that work? :D

It sounds OK to me. Unless it is really torn, you may be able to repair it with electrical tape over the sticker. It would provide as much electrical insulation as a sticker.

The only problem that i can foresee is the thickness of the silicone. The cooler bracket screws are not that long.

Nuclear crisis diverted :D Turns out that manufacturer supports legacy products from 5 years ago and they will provide me with a new backplate, I will also get fan mounts which i was missing :) Gotta love SilentiumPC :)

Yup, the mobo was dead.
Everything works again even without installing a new system, but I'm reverting back to Win7 anyway so... better get to it :D
Thanks for your help :)
