Router slowing my Internet

I live in the middle of nowhere and one day I called our ISP to see if we could upgrade our service because I game a lot. Monday our service was upgraded to 50 Mbps but I was still sitting at 25 mbps with from time to time I would get 30 mbps, so the IPS sent a tech to check why we wasn't getting our numbers, he showed us from the Modem he was getting 50+ and it was our router causing the issue. He did say that the firewall was the cause but me being a noob to networking I have no clue what to look at or to do. If it is the firewall what do I do?... Should I turn off the firewall? He said the modem had a firewall and is updated once every 2 or 3 months, so any idea I can try that might resolve my issue.

Router: Medialink AC1200 (Purchased 4 weeks ago)
Security WPA/WPA2-PSK

I hope this is enough detail and if you need more about please just let me know, please remember I am new to the whole networking thing so I need detail for what I am looking for. Thanks again

If the firewall on your router is active as well as the firewall on your system, you should disable the one on your system. What OS are you on? On another note, you may want to see if there are any firmware updates available for your router. Information about your router is quite limited, I'm afraid, off the www.

Thanks for getting back to me. @kanewolf Wire which is what I run on my PC, but it is also the same with WIFI and that's what everyone else uses.
@Lutfij Both modem, router, and my system are running a firewall. As far a my personal system I did turn off the Firewall and no change. I don't know much about the router, I needed something that would be a cheap updated router, the one we had was 6 or so years old. I dont know anything about networking I have tried a few things that I have read about but nothing really out there.
Ill be getting into the settings later today, is it safe to disable the firewall on the router since the Modem has a firewall?

Almost no modem has a firewall. These are basically fancy media converters they are designed to do only a simple function.

Now if the device you call a modem has a router in it then it can contain a firewall. If your so called "modem" has wifi or has mulitple lan ports it is likely a router.

If the device is a router you do not actually need you second router so you could just not use it and solve your issues.

In general a home user does not need any router firewalls because the NAT function prevent any attack from reaching internal machines.

Things on your PC maybe called firewalls but that is more virus and malware protection and is used to protect against a different form of attack that can't really be done on routers.

Here in a little while ill get some better answers as far as to what the modem is so at least I will know and some router settings. I have not touch the router setting since I purchased it, I am disabled and bed redden so i'm at the will of others to get details. But ill have more answers shortly. Oh also the Ethernet cable I am using is Cat6 all around. Thanks again and for the patience.
