Ok, so my desktop died and I wanted to upgrade to something a bit newer. So I found a nice mini tower. When it came I noticed it was not exactly the same internally as mine. My old desktop had IDE HDD's with the ribbon cable. The newer desktop I purchased has the SATA type cables. I didnt want to buy any new HDD's cause I have three of them that are perfectly good. The one in the old desktop has some systems on it that I still wanted to use. So I bought one of those handy dandy IDE HDD to SATA adapters. Hooked it up and nothing. Checked the bios and nothing. Even my CD ROM wasnt showing. I unhooked the adapter and checked again and the CD ROM appeared. I read up on how to connect the adapter again and it seems like I am doing everything right but still cant get the IDE HDD to be recognized. Soooooo I ordered a new SATA HDD. I would like to use my IDE drive also. Anyone had any luck using one of these adapters? If so, what am I not doing correctly?

Yes, about 5 years ago I was upgrading my system to an Ivy Bridge setup. I got one of those converters for my big drive. I got a new SATA drive and made it my boot drive and attached my old IDE with the adapter as a data dive. I used the regular molex power connector and it worked for a while. The drive didn't last too long and I always thought it would have lasted longer in the old system running off the IDE port. Now I use a IDE to SATA adapter that plugs into the USB port. I then can drag and drop files to my bigger sata drives.

IDE has the whole master and slave relationship going on between the connected drives. What's happening here is you are converting a old standard to a new standard but sata won't understand these relationships so it will run into trouble. Try disconnecting the cd rom and put the ide drive into slave mode. Most likely this will work.

I would recommend you to just get a external hdd enclosure and use the hdd as an external drive for whatever life it has left in it and not use it as any sort of important drive.
