The reason you are told that, is the Citrix login is encrypted from your PC to the server. The Citrix client handles the encryption. But your printer just uses regular networking, so a USB printer would be OK. If you use a desktop, then a wired connection of some kind will provide the best performance.

if this is a work from home setup. you have a few options. one is go from the modem to a small biz switch that has two secure ip setups. one you use for your home setup and wifi. the other is for your work pc. go from the switch to the pc hard wired if you can. if you have to use wireless becuae you cant run an ethernet cable. look for powerline unit to have wifi over your home wires. another option is see if a biz account you can get two modems. the work modem you set to the slowerst and cheapest plan they have. that modem into your work pc with a firewall device.

If I use a TP-Link TL-SG1005D 5-Port Unmanaged Gigabit Desktop Switch, do I just plug my computer in to it downstairs and then I will have fast, secure internet service from the modem and router upstairs?

I wager you are already secured and don't even realize it.

The Citrix server provides encryption, and the other end of that encryption is your pc/laptop. In the biz we call this a TUNNEL, people outside the tunnel cannot see what you are doing. You can move your pc/laptop around the house and it won't matter. Moving a tunnel entrance doesn't break anything.
