Hi, I am thinking of purchasing an Asus ROG MAXIMUS X HERO (WI-FI AC) mother board and I wish to use a SAMSUNG 970 EVO M.2 2280 1TB PCIe Gen3. X4, NVMe drive to boot windows on it. Is there anything special I would need to do for the windows install to see this drive? Can I just drop in the SSD in one of the M.2 slots and it will work right off the bat? This MB has two of those M.2 slots, which one should it go into?

This depends on windows version, you're trying to install. With windows 10 - no problems. With windows 7 - you'll have to integrate additional drivers and OS hotfixes into installation.
NVME M.2 drive (like 970 evo) you can install into any M.2 slot on the motherboard. Sata M.2 drive is supported only into one of those slots. Read the manual.
