Nvidia gtx 760 - Code 43 - but still outputting display - broken or not?

HI Folks,

I was playing Dota and the screen froze / computer locked up, I couldn't access task manager or windows menu so I had to manually restart. Back into the game and the same thing happened within 30 secs of getting into the game.

Time to troubleshoot. I noticed in device manager that the GPU has a code 43 and I cannot access nvidia control panel. There is still display coming from the gpu, I'm not plugged into the mobo directly, but graphical effects are very taxing on the computer, games impossible to play. This situation persists despite me taking the following steps:

Steps I've taken:

  • Physically checked the power attachment to the card.
Tried the card in a different slot (no difference)
Removed drivers and nvidia software using ddu and reinstalled.
    Flashed the most recent bios
    updated Windows 10
Updated to most recent graphic drivers
    Tried it with older drivers.
Tried updating via geforce experience, via windows update and via the direct download from the website

I do not have another machine to try the gpu in, I don't mind buying another gpu if that is goosed, but I want to make sure first, have you any other troubleshooting advice?
Is it not weird that I am still getting output from the gpu?

Other info I can think might be relevant - I had a message a few weeks ago about an overclocking profile failing or something. This is OC that was down by the shop, I haven't messed around with anything.

Thanks in advance for any help,
LilDozer

Normally This error is power related issue.
-I Would try the following: Switch to Another Empty PCI-E slot if able
-Reconnect all GPU related power Cables and check if they are properly connected once reconnected.
-Check if the PSU its delivering the right voltage to the card with a tester
-Check the mobo manual if your mobo has a voltage limit on its PCI-E ports (i doubt this one, but some does... For example dell custom ones)

Hope it helped you!
Cheers!

Thanks Ramlethal,
I've tried the GPU in a different slot with no improvement.
The Power cables seem fine, the fans are spinning (I'm not sure this indicates much, but worth reporting on), I tried a different slot on the PSU for the cables, this didn't make any difference.
The PCI cable is showing 12.18V on each of the 3 live cables, tested with a voltmeter.
I'm not sure on your last point about a voltage limit.

So what to try now? Any ideas?

THanks,
LilDozer

uhm i have a couple more of aces left...
Lets try the following One:
-On your desktop, Press Windows + R, and search for appwiz.cpl and press Enter.
-You will see all the applications installed on your computer. Search through them for Lucid MVP software (in case its there), right-click it and select Uninstall.
-After uninstalling the application, restart your computer and check if the problem got solved. If the hardware still gives an error 43 code, try disabling it via Device Manager and then re-enabling it.

Thanks for your time Ramlethal,
No sign of Lucid MVP and I've tried the disable / reenable with no success.

Thanks Robert,
I've airblasted the thing to deal with the majority of the dust, but no help.

Just an update- took it to a technician who recommended I buy a cheap graphics card as the best way to test the slot and troubleshoot this problem. It would also be cheaper than getting the tech to look at it.
Grabbed a slight upgrade off ebay for £70. Just installed and everything looks good, no issues in device manager, can play games again etc.
So a faulty GPU seems to have been the problem.
Thanks to those guys who helped.
