Problems with people stealing a WiFi line off my router

Whenever one device on my network leaves the network router, somehow my neighbours are keeping that IP address of that device on my router and using it to get a free connection off my router. I feel really sad about this I work hard to pay my broadband bills and yet people like this can steal it so easily. What can I do to prevent this ? I have the new talk talk hub. Please can you advise me. I also think they have somehow managed to get hold of some off the routers admin details from my account area with talk talk and they have cloned a router of their own to receive data from my router.

The admin login details should be with the paperwork for your router or on a label on the underside. Login in is usually done by going through a web browser with the routers IP address ie: 192.168.0.1 or similar it should give you a login screen. Once in go-to the WiFi settings and enable wep or one of the other WiFi security settings and add a password, that should stop them.
Change admin password.

It is not likely someone else is using your router. Almost all modern routers no longer have some common wifi password and are set to encrypt the connection by default . Too many lazy people did not bother to change it so now they put in random ones and put it on the bottom of the router. If you gave them your password at some then it is your fault for not changing it.

In any case change the wifi password to something else. Turn off WPS in the wireless setting. Nobody can then get to your router.

For secure wifi

  • ■ Disable admin on WAN interface
    ■ Change the admin password
    ■ Change the WIFI password
    ■ Disable the WPS option on the router
    ■ Set your WIFI encryption to WPA2
    ■ disable any guest networks
    ■ Don't use the same password for the admin login and the WIFI.
    ■ Don't give out your WIFI password.
Follow the rules for strong passwords:

  • ■ uppercase
    ■ lowercase
    ■ numbers
    ■ special characters
    ■ no dictionary words
    ■ use a 10+ character password

If you follow these rules, nobody will steal your WIFI.
