I just over clocked my intel core i7 8700k from 3.7GHz to 4.7GHz as recommended. Anyone know how far I can go without ruining my system? I have the MSI Z370 Gaming Plus MoBo. I have pictures of my temperatures and stuff like that. Thanks

Okay, with the H7 your upper limit is 4.7 to 48GHz.

Double check your current temps with Prime95 version 26.6 and AIDA64 stability test. Do the P95 blend test and check your maximum CPU temp. If it is well under 80 degrees C at 4.7GHz, great..Go to 4.8GHz and test again, so long as you are under 80 degrees C you are okay as Prime95 puts a lot of load onto the CPU..

Just a matter of testing temps with the overclock and keeping everything under 80 degrees C...
This all depends on your cooling setup as heat will be the major issue the higher you go on your overclock. What CPU cooler are you using?

Under normal aircooling with a mid range decent Air Cooler you should be okay at 4.8GHz, higher end Air Coolers will get you to 4.9GHz/5Ghz but we are talking the top end Noctua but after that a good AIO will get you to 5GHz. Beyond that 360mm AIO's or customer watercooling and deliding are the order of the day.

Also keep in mind that a manual overclock will be much, much better as you can and will need to control the vcore or voltage to the CPU. Anything over 1.35v is too much for me, though others say 1.4v or less. You can get the vcore to under 1.3v to 1.35v for a 5GHz overclock with some playing around though it does depend a bit on the CPU lottery.

Finally, I delidded my 8700K which made a huge difference on temps which again will be critical when getting to a 5GHz overclock.

To summarise, for whatever overclock you can reach, you need to keep the cpu under 80 degrees C with a test like AIDA64 and Prime95 version 26.6 (that's my personal limit). Getting you CPU vcore to its lowest for that overclock will also help keeping temps down.
