Hello people,

So I will be getting a new motherboard soon (ROG MAXIMUS X ) for my i7-8700k processor, problem is I have read enough threads on 'ram slots not working' I want to be able to check all the slots one bye one. I will be buying 2 ram modules (8GB each). Please guide me how can I check all 4 slots with 2 Ram sticks because as far as I know I will have to insert them in A2, B2 slots in order for them to be detected. any work arounds? Can 1 ram stick be inserted into any of the slots irrespective of population order to check all 4 slots one by one? Kindly help, Thanks.

Why would you need to test the A1 and B1 slots?

Regardless, they don't need to be in A2 and B2 to be "detected", they just need to be in those slots for optimum performance and dual channel operation. Technically, they'll probably work fine in the other two slots.

Regardless though, I don't see why you would care if the other two slots work or not. If you plan to use four modules, you better buy them all in one kit. Buying memory that is not matched and tested is bad enough when you're dealing with only two modules. Four modules and the problem is four times as likely that one of them won't play nice with the others, OR, it will but not in dual channel.

Also, the more modules that are installed, the more heat that is created in the memory controller, the more stress that is put on the CPU and memory controller and the more likely you will encounter problems with your memory configuration.

If you need 16GB. Buy 2 x8GB. If you need 32GB, buy 2 x16GB. If you need more than that, then buy a quad set that is tested at the factory to work together and comes together in a matched set.

Then, if one of the slots doesn't work, and honestly I do this every single day and have never heard of anything remotely like there being a problem with "ram slots not working" being an issue, you'll have to return the board anyhow, so what does it matter. Get what you need. If something doesn't work, return it. Simple. Stop trying to make it so hard on yourself or overthink things.

the issue is not that the ram slots or ram dont work on newer mb that you see a lot of people post about. is that intel and amd new cpu the ram controller is part of the cpu now. a lot of times on new builds people with intel chips dont check wit ha led flashlight the pins on the mb before then install the cpu. with the newer mb and intel cpu pin part of the mb and not the cpu chip now i seen a few mb that the black cpu pin cover protector has not worked and a seen new mb with a few smashed pins. if new builders dont catch that there bent pins then some of the ram slots may not work. the same if users drops and bends the pins and has shorted the cpu or mb ram slot out. if you want to test all four slots you can do it with one dimm and walk it into all 4 slots. if the slot is bad there wont be a post. with two dimms just swap the dimms slots. in real world as long as the two main slots are fine. just leave the build alone. most new mb have more then one year warranty now.if the other two slots dont work and there no bent pins you can rma the mb. the issue is if you move parts around you can snap the ram slots or short the ram out and kill your new rig.
