[SOLVED] Game crashing when GPU reaches 80 degrees C.

Good morning

I have been having problems with my PC over the last month. Upon further inspection, I have identified that my PC doesnt like my GPU to run over 80 degrees. Idle temperature is 55 degrees C, under stress it reaches 80, at which point any game crashes to desktop.. sometimes BDOS.

Basically my whole PC is brand new... apart from my PSU (which is around 5 years old). I have a temporary fix, which is using a 3rd party program to lock fps at 60 to ensure my gpu load and temp stay below 80 (this feels awful as I have a 144hz monitor).. but there is no crashing. I have a feeling that perhaps my PSU is causing problems with powering the GPU under load.. but would love to know if you have any other solutions?

Other things that I am going to try:

  • - re applying thermal paste on GPU
    - using afterburner to set custom fan speeds
.

Specs are:

  • GALAX GTX1060 gb (factory OC)
    Ryzen 1700 (no OC)
    16 gb ddr4 ram (3200)
2 SSD (one operating system, one for games)
    PSU - 750W Enermax Modular 82+

Cheers Tim

Thanks for the reply. Case is well ventilated. I have the CPU water cooled and two large fans from the front off the pc pointing out to the exhust at the back. The water cooler exhaust is shooting though the top of the case.

Hi guys, im having the exact same problem, gpu temps reach 82 celsius and games crashing to desktop, no BSOD for me. And after setting max temperature at 73 celsius in afterburner crashing stops as gpu automatically changes clocks to mantain 73 celsius. im planning on RMAing the card as i think that temperatures that high are not normal, but i have colleagues 1080 graphics card to test today to make sure that its not the PSU or any other thing. I will come back later to give you my findings.

BTW i have 2 120mm front and 1 120mm rear fans. Airflow should not be a problem as my ryzen with stock cooler is at 60 celsius while gaming.

My rig:
MSI B450M bazooka
AMD ryzen 5 2600
2x8GB G.SKill 3200MHz CL14
MSI GTX 1070 gamming X 8GB
EVGA G3 650W
