Samsung 970 EVO Horribly Slow

Hello everyone,

This is my first experience with M.2 SSDs so I'm sorry if I made some dumb mistake somewhere.

I purchased a 500gb 970 EVO for a new PC build I just got running, but the speeds are so slow my PC is unusable. CrystalDisk is reporting read/write speeds anywhere between 30 - 80 MB/s just sitting idle at the desktop. It takes about 5 minutes for Windows to boot, and another 2-3 minutes for the desktop to actually be usable (can't open programs, background images don't appear, etc).

I have one other 500gb SSD, and a 2tb hard drive both on the normal SATA ports in the motherboard. Whether they are actually plugged in or not does not affect the M.2 speeds, and both of those drives read normal read/write speeds from CrystalDisk.

I noticed recently that the system will not boot at all if I turn off the USB to PS2 emulation in the bios. The Windows booting spinner will spin for about a minute, then the screen goes black and doesn't do anything from there.

It appears the drive came from Samsung formatted as GPT, and when I tried to install Windows, it didn't like it. I used the command line to reformat it as MBR, not a third party app (since there was no operating system to run the app on). I don't see how this would be a huge issue but everything else about this install is on factory settings and done by-the-book, so that may be an issue. I simply am not familiar with how these work.

Windows 10 64 bit pro, clean install
i7 8700k
Asus Z370 Prime A

I have no idea where to even begin addressing this issue, so any help at all is greatly appreciated!

(I haven't been on a computer this slow since the poor old Dell Dimension I tried to run Windows 7 on, Lol)

I have the same m.2 as you and it works perfectly fine and fast. M.2s are the fastest you can get. Have you installed windows on the m.2 ssd? Check your motherboard specifications based on m.2s.

I did install Windows on it. Samsung Magician says everything is up to date, and my bios is up to date as well
