I currently have a GTX 970 Zotac graphics card. My questions is should I upgrade to a gtx 1080 for 400$ or spend another 125$ to buy another used zotac 970 and SLI? I don't plan on going 1440p or 4k anytime soon and I am just looking to maximize my fps.

If the titles you play support SLI and scale well, the 970SLI option mght be somewhat viable.

BUT, SLI support is poor in general, and scaling is never 1:1. A single, stronger GPU would be preferred.

I would full expect a 1070, 1070TI or 1080 to offer similar (if not greater) FPS vs SLI 970s outside of a titles with great SLI scaling.

if you plan on staying at 1080P, which is more CPU intensive than GPU... you would be okay with the 970s in SLI, but for ease and across the board prices are good for 1080s right now, if you can go that route.
