Hey my question has probs been answered before but i cant seem to come across it after looking for 20 minutes.

i have a Gtx 1080ti and im currently using a Samsung 27inch 4k free sync monitor which i normally have v sync off and with AA off and above 90+ fps in games i dont see really any screen tear at all.

which now im wanting to upgrade was looking at 2 diffrent 1440p monitors with refresh rates of 144hz+ and im curious to know if i only hit roughly 120fps in game will i see screen tear? or does screen tear only happen above the advertised refresh rate?

overall is it a good idea to change from 4k 60hz freesync to a lower resolution at 1440p with 144hz+ adaptive sync? i play alot of online shooters like Pubg, overwatch, fortnite and Ring of Elysium.

Solution
You do get screen tearing, but it's VERY hard to notice in my experience if you're pushing 100+ frames. I have a 144hz 1080p panel OC'ed to 165hz and try to keep my games between 100-120+++ and haven't noticed any screen tearing with no V-sync or anything.

As far as OP goes, if you play a lot of FPS games then I would absolutely go for a 144hz monitor, it makes a huge difference on your experience. Your aim will be a little better, it will place a little less strain on your eyes, and the desktop feel will be a lot smoother. For me personally, I get seasick at lower framerates so I try to keep FPS as high as possible and it makes gaming tolerable for me. I have a 4k60 monitor as a 2nd monitor and use a 1080p144 monitor as my main...
With your Nvidia GPU you cannot utilize FreeSync.

You can however use FastSync, which is accessible from the Nvidia control panel. It helped me with screen tearing when I got a 4K 60Hz monitor.

If you are buying a new monitor, you should consider G-Sync because that is Nvidia's adaptive sync technology.

thank you ive been looking at G sync but dont really wanna outlay another $300+ for a monitor as i spend alot of money towards pc.

but with free sync do i have screen tear if im below the 144hz?

This is the biggest lie ever told in pc industry, yes you get screen tearing under and over refresh rate. If under refresh rate you would not get screentearing then why g-syng or freesync? These technologies work only under refresh rate, so if no screen tearing occur under refresh rate why bother getting g-sync or freesync? Screen tearing occur anytime, no matter of refresh rate or fps thats why nvidia and amd invested that much in removing tearing. (V-sync is not in discussion here and it is presumed in off state)

Solution
I'll tell you why g-sync and freesync exist if you want, It's simply because under the monitors refresh rate it has to double up on the same image every 2nd, 3rd or 4th frame etc, the uneven nature of this can cause a jittery looking image.
