So I want to upgrade my trashy AMD Athlon II x4 640, and my mother board (M2N68-LA) says that these are the only upgrades available:

AMD Phenom II X4 9xx/9xxe/8xx Quad-Core (Deneb)
AMD Phenom II X3 7xx/7xxe Triple-Core (Heka)
AMD Phenom II X2 5xx (Callisto)
AMD II Athlon X4 6xx/6xxe (Propus)
AMD II Athlon X3 4xx/4xxe (Rana)
AMD II Athlon X2 2xx/2xxe (Regor)
AMD Sempron 1xx (Sargas)

However, I was aiming for a Phenom II x6 processor since its an AM3 socket. Is it possible to install CPUs above the criteria on the list?

Solution
Your motherboard apparently does not support Phenom II x6 CPUs. They will fit, since they have the same physical socket, but I wouldn't reccomend it, since your mobo might not recognise it or may not be able to power it properly.

A good upgrade would be any Phenom II x4 BE, which should allow for overclocking. However, since your board isn't really adequate for overclocking, I'd recommend you stay with the Athlon II x4 you have at the moment, since the improvement from moving to a Phenom is fairly small.
