I wanted to know the difference between the two, I would like to backup my pc and mac and iphone to this if possible. I see that the my cloud has a Ethernet port and acts like a NAS drive, would the my book behave the same if plugged into a router?
Thanks in advance

The "My Cloud Home" can backup your PC and MAC. You would normally backup your phone to your mac or PC as that requires i-Tunes.
As you say it does act as a basic NAS.

The mybook is just an extermal (USB) drive that has no intelligence. You would need to plug it into a computer.
You can use NTFS as a common format if you buy OsxX drivers, or you can use fat32.

I would recommend the "My Cloud" or some other NAS solution eg Synology.
