3tb hdd in docking station

I have a 3tb hdd on sata2 in a sata2 usb2 docking station external drive. I've had this drive now 2 years and it that time it only shows as 1.1tb + 800gb. No matter what I do it's not showing the full 3tb or after indexing at least 2.8tb. Why someone help

I'm not a computer guy but I do have a similar experience, it was with my old pc from 2007 which would not recognize the 3tb drive I bought in 2015 or 2016. I think a bios update helped with the situation.
