Uncertainty about directions to take with new motherboard purchase

I built my current gaming pc setup 4 years ago, but recently encountered some issues; after a lot of testing we found out that the motherboard is dead. This means new mobo! However, I basically have two choices:

  • Purchase a similar mobo that is compatible with my CPU (old mobo for cheap like £50)

OR, whilst i'm here upgrade mobo properly with latest boards and consequently the CPU as well (££££)
If I upgrade mobo and CPU I am limited by components such as my RAM using DDR3, instead of the new DDR4. So i'm wondering if its worth upgrading mobo and CPU or just waiting and saving up and upgrading way more components to allow for new stuff such as DDR4 compatible components?

My system:
GPU: nvidia GeForce GTX 760
CPU: AMD FX(tm)-6300 Six-Core processor
Motherboard: MSI-970A-G46 (MS-7693) (now dead)
8GB RAM Corsair vengeance
Power supply: Corsair CX500M
Hard drive: Western Digital 1TB WD10EZEX 2014
Network card: Realtek PCle GBE family controller
Case: Corsair - Vengeance C70 (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case

Just looking for recommendations and ideas.

If it were me...it would depend on how bad I was struggling with what I had.

Like....if I couldn't play the games I wanted to at the settings I wanted to I would go for the upgrade.

Your CPU isn't that bad....and neither is the GPU and I imagine it can play games OK. Is that good enough?

Also, I think you could up the GPU a bit still with that CPU you have and still be OK.

Or, you could get an SSD and that would speed things up.

Just some things to think about.

If you have the money for a newer platform then there's really no need to go with a older platform. Even a 1600/B350 (or B450) & 8gb DDR4 @3200 would be a huge improvement over your current FX and would work well with your other existing parts.

Or if you really only have enough money for the FX motherboard then go for that if your fine with your current gaming performance.

Ok lets say I have enough money for newer system, you'd recommend the B350 or B450? I do have the money for a new platform but not enough to go nuts (the $200+ ones really)

Do you have any recommendations if I were to get a new mobo, CPU and RAM that were somewhat modern? (DDR4 etc).

I'd go B450 for better compatibility.
