Hi, i recently was forced into updating windows 10 (looking at you shutdown and update button) after this update happened i went to bed, next day i go on my pc takes a while to load which is odd because i have windows installed on its own ssd. I eventually get into windows and everything is really slow and im not able to do anything. Ontop of this many of the icons for shortcuts arent showing up. Task manages even stopped responding. I decided to restart my pc after that the red light in the bottom right of my z270x gigabyte board lights up solid. The pc now wont even get past the gigabyte logo in the post screen anymore. The user manual says that the specific red light i have coming up is to do with the boot drive so i unplugged the ssd from the motherboard and tried to boot again and used a windows 10 usb to try and install windows on one of my harddrives. I am not able to even get into the windows installer i get a error code and it says the system needs to be restored. Now when i boot up my pc the cpu and dram lights flash between eachother before going to the boot light being solid again. If i leave the gigabyte cycle to go on long enough i manage to get to a broken version of windows that i cant do anything in. Many of the icons are missing. The task bar stops responding aswell as the task manager. Any help or just general advice would be useful thanks.

depending on the version of windows 10 you have (sounds like you're one who rarely updates anyway so that's the first problem) there is both an option to "update and shut down" and just "shutdown" available

Yeah i probably should update more frequently however i did another windows update not too long ago, probably around two weeks ago so it shouldnt have been that bit of a difference.

if this was the october update you should check settings to see if you can roll back to a previous version if you are able to get back into windows at this point. how full was your SSD drive before the update?

Im pretty sure i had atleast 15gb left im going to say. I was thinking that too. Thats why i was going to try and install windows on one of my harddrives that i know has space so that i can get a look at/wipe the ssd clean. Im only able to get into windows sometimes like a 1/6 chance if i leave it long enough but once i get in it is practically impossible to check anything because the file explorer stops responding instantly. Additionally sometimes the bios will say attempting automatic repair then go to a black screen and nothing else happens.

if it was 15GB and it was trying to install the new october update then it may have ran out of space to install it. there were y articles out there warning users to make sure they have enough space available for the update and since you only have a 120GB drive unfortunately i believe this is why you are having these problems

That makes sense but then idk why its still messing up when i try and install windows on a different drive. I completely unplugged the ssd and when i tried to install windows using a installation usb it gave me an error code of something like x00000098. When i checked it was saying i have to restore windows but its not possible without the ssd in.

that sounds like the update may have installed some system files on your HDD. i would check to see if there are any new files or folders on your other drive
