GeForce 2080 not recognised

Hi guys,

I have an issue with my GeForce 2080 graphics card not being recognised at all. If I remove it from the PCI-e x16 slot and use onboard graphics, the system works fine. As soon as I plug in the card, the system fails to start and I just have an empty black screen (even if I still use the HDMI cable via onboard graphics).
I can’t even get to the BIOS startup screen with the card plugged in.

This is a new build, with Windows 10 updated and latest nVidia driver applied (even tried a previous driver version).
I tried flashing the BIOS to the latest version but still no luck.
I tried disabling the onboard graphics but still didn’t work.
I tried using another 2080 (in case it was faulty) but that one still failed to boot.
I tried in another system but still no good.
The system components should be compatible, according to specs.
Please help!

System details:
i7 8700k
Gigabyte Z370-HD3 (also tried a H170M-D3H with an i7 6700k)
Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2080 Windforce
16Gb Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3000
Samsung Evo 970 SSD (runs Windows 10)
WD Black 2Tb HDD
Acer Predator XB241YU
Corsair RM650x
Nothing overclocked yet

Im not quite secure that the Corsair RM650x supports a single 2080 on THAT system Any chance to borrow a larger PSU?
Also, are you extremly sure you are connecting everything firmly and in its place?
Are you by any chance using a Molex adapter or something to connect the RTX 2080?

650W is the MINIMUM requirement for a 2080 and from the little that i know of PSU's i do not beleive that the Corsair PSU you have is that high a quality. If you can take it into a store or back where you purchased and try it in a PC with a stronger PSU this will confirm that it is indeed the PSU causing the problem....

I still dont have any faith on the Corsair RM650x .
Since its not quite a quality PSU and the RTX 2080 Draws nearly from 225W to 277W.
Being said this and considering your current setup Im quite sure your PSU its not capable and its the problem here.
if by any chance you can get borrow a PC that has a more capable and suitable PSU, try its PSU on your PC.
If not, i would take the WHOLE CPU to a computer store, then ask the Store to kindly install a new PSU you will buy if the RTX 2080 boots just fine with it.
I choose some suitable PSUs that you can pair with it:
PSU 1
PSU 2
PSU 3 (Overkill)
PSU 4

Do you have a gpu from another system you can try? The fact it doesn’t work on 2 different motherboard & cpu setups makes me think it’s a dead gpu. Unless the PSU has a fault on the 12v rail I would not expect any problem with your psu. It’s not a top end psu but it’s also not bad either.

Op said exactly : "I tried using another 2080 (in case it was faulty) but that one still failed to boot"
So its not the GPU. Its a PSU related problem.

A 650 power supply is more than enough to support a 2080 and the card is definitely secure and in place and is connected via a PCI-e power cable (8 + 6 pin), not Molex. Tried two separate power cables as well but still no good.

Yes and No. not any PSU is capable of delivering truly 650W. As its the case for Sentey Psus that are 850W gold + appereantly but they crash at 620W.

Understand but don’t think that’s the case with the Corsair RM650x. Even if it delivers 90% efficiency (as claimed and verified in everything I’ve read), that’s still plenty to support the system. Thanks for the reply. I’m taking them back to the shop to get diagnosed.

Any updates on this? I kind of have the same issue with my RTX 2080, I get black screen when I try to turn on the pc but it seems my screens do not detect the new graphics card also one of the ventilators gets to 100% While the other 2 doesn't work and the pc doesn't post at all... I was wondering if it is PSU related.
