Which part in my computer is likely broken/dead?

Hi!

I'm quite a beginner when it comes to Overclocking and such.
In an attempt to make my workflow a tiny bit faster and reduce (more) latency in games. I tried overclocking my 5820k CPU from 4.2Ghz on 1.25v to 4.5 on 1.275

This being done on a ITX Motherboard was apparently quite ambitious!
After the reboot my Windows would load and i did my stress testing via 'AIDA64 Extreme'
Thinking that a 30Minute benchmark should give me a good indication wether the CPU is "stable" or if my pc would crash

Well, my PC froze! So as i figured out this was probably a bit too ambitious. I wanted to go back to my original settings and so i rebooted into Bios and changed the BIOS settings back to default and started over again. Going back to 4.2 as i figured i should just ask someone to help me with this project rather than doing it on my own

My PC booted and windows loaded.
I started by opening Chrome to look up some more info and to try and learn a bit more about the bits and pieces i was working with
Unfortunately my Windows quickly froze again, repeating the same behavior it had when i had the 4.5Ghz clock speeds..
I got a bit confused and so i changed my settings to default to see if my pc would run alright without ANY changes to the BIOS..
But .. as you could probably guess.. It froze again if id open a program.
I was able to boot Windows most of the time; sometimes it would Bootloop at the Splashscreen and so the next time i got into Windows i wanted to troubleshoot by eliminating what components could be the cause for these freezes.
AIDA booted up fine without freezing; so i stress tested memory with success, CPU with success and GPU with success
I also downloaded Heaven to double check if anything was wrong, it completed the benchmark perfectly fine with a reasonable score

Got a bit comfortable and decided to open Chrome again but it would freeze.

Now i work daily behind my computer and so i had to think quick and decided to pass over some components to my second computer which im using right now

And i come here in desperate need of some tips

Does anyone know what could be wrong with my Computer?
I've tried memory banks using a single RAM stick. Both with the same result
Also tried booting from USB into Linux with the same results

My Specs;

Processor: Intel Core i7 5820k
RAM: 16GB (8x2) DDR4 Dual-Slot Memory 3200hz
Motherboard: Asrock X99E-ITX
Powersupply: EVGA Supernova 750Watt G2
Graphics Card: EVGA Geforce GTX1070
CPU Cooler: Corsair H110GTX AIO
Case: Fractal Design Define Nano (ITX)
SSD 1: NVME M.2 Samsung 950 Pro 256GB
HDD: 4TB Seagate Baracuda
Windows 10

Thank you so much in advance!

from what I'm gathering after you restored defaults in the BIOS everything works fine except when you use Chrome?

If that's the case, completely uninstall Chrome and install it fresh again.

When overclocking, you should never just jump to a speed more than one point higher than what you have.
Always move up by one point and test for stability until it is unstable then up the voltage by a few points until stable (in this case, going from 1.25v to 1.30v would work and from there to 1.35) then when stable you try to bump the speed some more little by little until unstable then continue repeating this cycle until you reach one of three points.

a. reaching a voltage level that you know you shouldn't go past with your particular CPU and of course this means you just can't get any higher overclock than last stable clock.

b. your temps are getting too high to push any further.

Once you find final stable overclock you reduce the voltage by one point (this is 0.01 at a time) until unstable then go back up by that one point again. This is the last step of overclocking and is recommended since now that you have max clock stable clock speed you want to get it to run at as low of a voltage as you can to keep the temps as good as possible.

But I digress, if you are saying that even after reverting to defaults in the BIOS your system doesn't boot up and work fine 100% of the time (with exception to Chrome of course) then please let me know. Chances are though if this is the case, then like ElectrO said, with the crashes and hard reboots Windows may have gotten corrupted system files.

Hey! thank you for taking your time to look over my issue!

So basically it's not JUST chrome that makes my windows freeze,
Booting Linux from a USB drive also ends up frozen AND trying to reinstall windows got me the same results! (frozen)
I realise my way of handling the whole Overclock situation wasn't the smartest way to go around doing things

It seems that every application that i've tried that makes use of some sort of Hardware acceleration got me freezes!

Hope this info helps

Thank you again!

PS: Windows Safe mode also froze

I'd say it has to be hardware, and you got to check everything.
HD Sentinel will tell you if your drives are dying
Memtest to check ram
The extra boost could have pushed something "too much" and it popped, maybe check motherboard for obvious signs of problems, capacitor popped or something (you can google how to check this).

You'll need to re-flash the Bios.
It probably did a random write in the system. If the bios flash doesn't work then the firmware for the wifi needs to be flashed. Linux has some diagnostics on boot up and if it is freezing there, its the wifi firmware.

Hey
I have checked the board. Which seems to be in the same state as before and so if it broke it wouldn't be visible to the eye

Thank you for responding! I'll have another look to be sure

I Haven't actually tried taking out the WiFi card yet. But that sounds like a smart thing to do!
Will reflash the motherboard tonight.

Downloaded a version of Mint and it got stuck twice at the earliest phase where it loads (logo screen)

Thank you for taking the time to help!
