[SOLVED] Lag after Windows Updates

I came back from a week long trip and fired my computer up again to let it install any updates it needed. Once it finished I noticed that I get some lag spikes now and again that get worse as time goes on. For example, when moving the mouse around on the desktop icons sometimes do not highlight, it takes some windows a while to open, games are running at half the FPS they used to, and the mouse refuses to go over to my second monitor. I tried uninstalling the graphics card and the lag went away but came back as soon as I reinstalled the drivers.

Occasionally the screen will black out and come back in a couple seconds with a message in the bottom right along the lines of “Display driver stopped responding and has recovered.” After this happens, the lag seems to disappear from everything and my game FPS returns to normal. However as soon as I restart the computer the problem returns.

I’m convinced that it’s an issue with a windows update or something incompatible with the graphics driver, but I’m not sure how to diagnose/fix it.

Ideas?

Solution
I always take a system restore checkpoint before I allow windows to update.
If you can, use system restore to reset back to when all was good.
Sometimes windows 10 pushes out less than optimal drivers.

I run windows 7. Tried system restore initially but it failed because it couldn’t identify the restore point or something like that.

I should add that in event viewer, I show an Event ID 14 error for nvlddmkm. When the driver stops working and recovers, I get another event there that states nvlddmkm has stopped responding and successfully recovered.
