Bad wired Internet connection. Is it my cable?

I got a new router-modem from my ISP today. It is a simple D-link N router.

I use a wired connection. Since I switched to this router-modem, the Internet connection is slow and full of interruptions, all day long. It took two tries just to log onto TomsHardware forum, for instance.

The ISP says it is because I am using my old cable to connect the router-modem. They say they don't see any interruptions on their end, so it must be bad hardware on my end.

Unfortunately, the new cable they gave me is too short to reach the router-modem. Is there another way I can check if that's really the problem? Does it make sense that the cable could be the problem? If I have to, I can move everything around so I can test with the new, short cable.
Please advise.

Thanks, guys.
I checked with another cable, still no good.
But now I can tentatively say the issue was caused by the telephone cord, rather than the network cable. I think the phone cord was not snapped tightly into the router-modem. The internet seems more stable now.

ISP support should first tell people to check all the points where the cables are connected, rather than trying to convince us to throw away our hardware. Test it before you trash it. :)

Ur run-of-the-mill ISP guy who come to your house are not worth a dog's walker. They seems to follow some prescribed procedure wo knowing why they are doing it and if they see something out of what they expect, they seem to go "uh, don't know, just ignore."

I've been in the biz for a long time and once in a while I would post, "be sure the cable goes in with a positive click, no mushyness. Inspect for bent pins blah-blah."
