Hard drive issues

My hard drive on my pavilion 6640c will play music CDs but will only allow the recovery CD to go as far as recovery or format part an after choosing option it just stops an on DVDs it say that hard drive is not ready, how can I reset this pc to where everything is working properly again

I'm came across pavilion 6640c, the hard drive plays CDs just fine, playing a DVD it says drive is not ready, putting in the recovery disks to factory reset only allows it to go as far as to format or recover an after choosing it asks if sure an choose yes it just stops diagnosis says it's working fine with no issues but it also says Direct 3D 9+ is not available an display driver does not support it. What I'm wanting to do is a complete format an factory reboot since it was someone elses computer at one time but it won't let me as I started above with the recovery CDs that came with it, any suggestions on how to wipe it out an restore another way or how to get the hard drive to fully read the recovery CDs themselves???
