So iam planning on upgrading but i just realized that the Motherboard im getting it has 9 mounting holes but my case only came with 8. Is it possible to install with 8 standoffs? and which one do i need to not use?

Solution

I would leave the screw between the two USB headers at the bottom empty, if I had to. (bottom middle) That would have the corner supported at least. Though I see no reason you can't just get another standoff. Local computer shops often have bins full of them, and you can always measure the ones you have and order some.

Yes....it's very possible.

Although here is something to pay attention to.

Sometimes....where the standoff meets the MB....there is a conductive pad on the MB that is meant to contact the standoff and provide a ground.

You want to have a standoff contacting this pad.

So if....where the standoff goes.....there is a conductive pad.....you want a standoff there. If not....it shouldn't matter much if there is a standoff there.

How do i know if it has a conductive pad? Like is there something visual i can look out for to make it easier to understand?

Not that exacting, it is nice to have all the grounds connected for a little noise reduction, but missing a standoff or two isn't the end of the world.

A lot of designs relied solely on the I/O shield for ground and used plastic standoffs. Addtionally, expansion cards will also ground the motherboard to chassis.

Basically as long as the ground plane in the motherboard have a path to ground, everything will be fine. It is mostly for safety anyway, the entire thing could float and still operate just fine.

I would drill, tap, and install a standoff or get a different case.
I wouldn't recommend not having all the motherboard screws installed. There are ground planes for the circuits that rely on the screws being installed.

So what would happen if i just installed the motherboard standoff and motherboard logically so if i have 1 less standoff would it affect anything? Basically breaking everything down if i install the motherboard with 8 standoff and there is one free space for another would it affect anything? Because all mounting holes are the same aren't they on the motherboard?

With the exact parts we can make a recommendation as to which is best to not be supported.

Usually I would say the 'bottom right' where the front panel headers are usually located. They don't take much pressure to install. Places like around the CPU socket, and near the ATX connectors, yes, because those connectors take some force to put in.

Some chassis have one or two built in stand offs or alignment pins, so you might be missing none. Others have all the standoffs as part of the chassis.

Thank you that was the answer i was looking for as it is simple and it gives me an idea of that it will work if i only had 8 standoffs. You also mentioned the bad sides which i can work around and even suggested me another way.

Yeah....usually there is a shiny looking circular pad.

....but as stated in the one post....you don't necessarily have to have them all connected as many times they are connected to each other on the board. I was just trying to be thorough.
